2300 sq ft, designed & owner-built without workshop support, ~$33/sq
ft with no labor costs included, completed in 1997.
Features include a Galvalume metal roof with hip-style trusses, post &
beam frame, Mexican tile & stained concrete foundation floors. Glen
and Patrice were early supporters of SBAT and attended meetings in the research
and planning stages of building (as many of us do). They lived in the garage
while working on the house and with friends, did nearly all of it by themselves-
rather than using workshop volunteers.
When sharing what might have been the biggest lesson they learned, Glen
says Never underestimate stucco work with the voice of a proud
do-it-yourselfer! Structro-Lite plaster was applied for the finish coat
on the interior walls, and the doors are all recycled. Again it seems, a
powerful incentive for many owner-builders is that lack of a mortgage payment
on your house.
