460 sq ft, designed and built by David Rose with owner John Schmidt at $83/sq ft, completed Winter 1999. Retro-fitted bale walls to existing wooden post & beam carport, with the same concrete foundation (as floor) and same metal roof. David and Kirsten are creative artists in various media- they provided many resources to John when he decided to enclose his carport for house guests.
Now, they even find themselves living here for a time... it’s a cozy little environment with copper sconces and subtle wooden accents recycled from all over. Due to the efficiency of the SB wall system (R-values = ~55), no central AC or heating has been needed, and John's description of this building style is “Nothing is standard, it's all custom and handmade.”
Note the playful use of imprinted leaves in the stucco, and the glass jars set into the wall as storage niches. Would most builders charge extra for that?
