combining wood and cob are perfectly acceptable.. You must prep the wood though before applying cob, this can be done by either severly scratching the wood giving a large suface are to key the cob into or applying burlap soaked with clay slip to the wood, let it dry, then wet it again and apply the cob.  You can also hammer many bent nails into the surface of the wood to grip the cob ( in combination with burlap technique

dear Dottie Porter"

>From my limited building with cob and adobe:

consider : using a drip edge above the window site and the

binding (joint)of cob to other materials to provide protection

to moisture and air infultration- I am not familiar with Lanto's book-

are there any references in the appendix? ( cob is going to shrink from the (wood) frame/

I suggest building a prototype before you invest considerable

time and money in your project

Best of luck/// clem

What care must be used in combining the two?. Should the wood always be on top of cob or could one wall be part cob, part wood vertically? Any suggestions or directions would be appreciated. (and I know doing this would affect the thermal ability of the design). Thanks. Dottie Porter
