Listservs

Listservs allow you to create your own private or public email based discussion group.

The quality of discussion on listservs is usually substantially higher than on bulletin boards or Usenet, as the small effort necessary to subscribe tends to deter "drive-by postings".

Listservs can also be used for one-way postings such as regular announcements of product specials or for newsletters, or as an "email-on-demand" service, where interested users can request particular documents be automatically emailed to them.

Some examples of the listservs we host include:

A public discussion group involved in an effort to ban the release of genetically engineered foods from mainstream use. (To subscribe, send email from your account to Ban-GEF@lists.txinfinet.com with the word "SUBSCRIBE" in the SUBJECT line).

The Global Straw Building Network, a private forum restricted to organizations involved in the promotion of straw as a building material. (If you are a member of such a group which is not yet represented in GSBN, email GSBN@lists.greenbuilder.com with SUBSCRIBE in the SUBJECT line. Your request will be forwarded to a moderator for consideration.)

A newsletter from the City of Austin's Green Builder Program, intended to replace their print version (To subscribe, send email from your account to GBNews@lists.greenbuilder.com with the word "SUBSCRIBE" in the SUBJECT line).

An "Email On Demand" service, making resource information available by request. Upon sending mail to a particular address you will receive a list of available files. Follow the easy instructions (enter an X for each file you'd like to receive, and send back to the same address) and you'll receive the files you request. (Sorry, no publicly available examples.)

A newsletter from the Austin Sustainable Building Coalition, to supplement the print version (To subscribe, send email from your account to SBCNews@lists.greenbuilder.com with the word "SUBSCRIBE" in the SUBJECT line).

A list used as a networking tool to introduce people interested in learning about various aspects of alternative technologies in a hands on setting with professionals working in the field who are interested in taking them on as interns on their projects. (To subscribe, send email from your account to WWAT@lists.greenbuilder.com with the word "SUBSCRIBE" in the SUBJECT line).

For more examples of listservs, see our Discussion Areas page.

Cost:

$25.00 setup (waived for 12 months paid in advance)
